How to make a shared kanban board, in three steps

About ten seconds from an empty tab to a board your team can open.

  1. 1

    Name the board

A board name and a password is the whole setup. Nothing is asked of you that you would have to remember later.

  2. 2

    Send the link

Every board lives at its own address. Copy it out of the board header and paste it wherever your team already talks.

  3. 3

    Move cards

To Do, In Progress and Done are there from the start. Rename them, add columns, drag cards across, and keep going.

Six interfaces for the same kanban board

Pick one and this page changes with it, board above included. Each one changes the type, the colour, the corner radius and the shape of the cards and columns. Tune the colours and fonts afterwards from Appearance in the board menu. The choice is kept in your browser and carries over to every board you open.

What a kanban board needs, and nothing else

KanbanThing is a utility, not a platform. It does the handful of things a board has to do and stays out of the way for the rest.

Share by link
The board lives at its own address rather than in your browser, so anyone holding the link and the password works on the same board, or a read-only link shares it without the password. There is nobody to invite and no seat to pay for.
Drag and drop
Move cards between columns by dragging, or move them from the card menu when a pointer is not an option.
Columns and a backlog
Add, rename and reorder columns. Park everything that is not scheduled yet in the backlog, the first panel on the board.
Calendar and timeline
The same cards on a calendar by due date, or on a timeline by most recent activity, when you need to see what lands when.
Password on every board
Boards are not listed or searchable, and the password is set at creation, so a leaked link alone is not enough.
Six interfaces
Switch the whole board between six looks, then change the colours, fonts, weights and corner radius to taste.

How long a board lasts: up to 60 days

Every board is removed up to 60 days after it is created. That is the longest a board can live and there is no way to push it back, so export anything you still need as JSON or CSV from the board menu, or start a fresh board and carry the cards over.

Common questions

Is KanbanThing free?
Yes. There is no paid tier to upgrade to and no trial to run out. Every board, every view and every setting is free, and advertising pays for running the site.
Do I need an account or a sign-up?
No. There is no account, no email address and nothing to install. You name a board, choose a password, and the board exists.
How do I share a kanban board with someone?
Open the Share menu in the board header, copy the edit link, and send it with the board password. The board lives at its own address rather than in your browser, so anyone you send the link to opens the same board and moves the same cards. There is nobody to invite and no seat to pay for.
Can other people edit the board too?
Yes. Anyone holding the edit link and the password can add, edit, move and delete cards, and add, rename and delete columns. There are no accounts, so there are no roles either: access is a property of the link somebody is holding. The board does not push other people's changes onto your screen, so reload to see what they did.
Is there a read-only link for people who should not edit?
Yes. The Share menu also copies a view-only link, which needs no password and shows the board name, the columns and the cards without a card editor, drag and drop, or export. Revoking it invalidates every view-only link you have sent, all at once.
How long does a board last?
You choose 14, 28 or 60 days when you create the board. Sixty days is the default and also the maximum, and the expiry date cannot be moved afterwards.
What happens when a board expires?
The board is deleted along with its columns and cards, and it cannot be recovered or renewed. Export the board as JSON or CSV from the board menu before then if you want to keep anything, or start a fresh board and carry the cards over.
Who can see my board?
Only the people you send the link to. Boards are not listed anywhere and are not indexed by search engines, and every board has a password set when it is created. Anything you type onto a card is stored as you typed it, so passwords, payment details and other sensitive information do not belong on a board.
Can an AI agent use a KanbanThing board?
Yes. KanbanThing hosts an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other MCP client can create a board and add, list, move and edit cards. It needs no account, no OAuth and no API key, which is what usually stops an agent from using a task board at all. There is also an installable skill that teaches an agent the conventions.
Is there a command line client?
Yes. The kanbanthing CLI signs in to a board with its link and password, then lists, adds, edits and moves cards and manages columns from a terminal. Every command takes a --json flag, so a script can drive the same board a person has open in a browser.

Free, and it stays free

There is no paid tier to upgrade to and nothing to sign. Open a board, send the link, and copy out anything you want to keep before the 60 days are up.
